Our Stephen Lawrence Ambassadors, supported by Mrs Ajetunmobi and Miss Valentine, have led a powerful week of activities celebrating the legacy of Stephen Lawrence and raising awareness about racism across our school and wider community.
From leading a thoughtful assembly, to organising a sponsored run and selling bracelets, our Ambassadors have shown real leadership, courage and commitment to making a difference.
We are incredibly proud of the way they have lived out our values—standing up for what is right, showing respect for all, and reminding us that everyone belongs.
Together, we continue to learn, reflect and take action. 💛

💛 Community Heroes at Desford Community Primary School 💛
Today, we were incredibly proud to present Daisy and Carter with a Community Hero Award for their outstanding kindness and courage earlier this week.
While in the park earlier this week, they came across an elderly couple who had sadly fallen and were unable to get up. Without hesitation, Daisy and Carter stepped in to help—offering reassurance, making sure an ambulance was called, and supporting the couple until they were safely on their way home.
Their actions showed such maturity, compassion and a genuine care for others. They truly lived out our Be Kind ethos—being kind to others when it mattered most.
We couldn’t be prouder of them. 🌟
A wonderful reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can make the biggest difference.

We are so excited to welcome our new starters and families to Desford Community Primary School this September 💛
Our Year 6 children wanted to share a special message to help you feel ready for your next big step by making a video and giving you a mini tour of the school. Starting school is a huge moment, and it’s completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and nerves.
At our school, we believe in being kind to ourselves, others and the environment—and from the very first day, our children are supported to feel happy, safe and part of our school family.
We can’t wait to meet you all soon 👋

🎶 What an incredible evening! 🎶
Our children had the amazing opportunity to perform at De Montfort Hall alongside several other schools, singing a fantastic selection of songs from the movies. 🌟
After an afternoon of rehearsals and a visit to Attenborough Arts Centre for a chance to explore, the children took to the stage and performed brilliantly to a packed audience.
We are so proud of how they represented our school—with confidence, enthusiasm and real joy.
A huge thank you to our staff for their support, to parents for cheering them on, and most importantly to our wonderful children for making it such a special experience.

Last week, we were proud to celebrate Neurodiversity Celebration Week across our school. Our Kindness Ambassadors led the way, planning and delivering a whole-school assembly that highlighted the importance of recognising and valuing the unique strengths within us all.
Throughout the week, children took part in a range of thoughtful activities designed to celebrate individuality, build understanding and promote acceptance. From creativity and problem-solving to different ways of thinking and learning, it was a powerful reminder that everyone brings something special to our community.
This was a wonderful example of pupil agency in action—children leading change, shaping conversations and helping to build a school where everyone feels seen, heard and valued.

Today Year 5 had the wonderful opportunity to interview a very special visitor - Pearl, Mrs Chadwick’s grandma. Pearl grew up in Coventry during the Blitz in World War Two and shared her memories of being a child during this time, as well as being evacuated to St Anne’s-On-Sea near Blackpool.
She spoke about her experiences during air raids, rationing, and what life was like for children during the war. The children were fascinated to hear about meeting American soldiers, who would sometimes give out chewing gum, which was something many children had never tasted before!
Year 5 asked brilliant questions and were amazed to hear what life was really like for children their age during the war. We are so grateful to Pearl for sharing such important memories with us and helping bring our history learning to life 🥰
Do any of our families have grandparents or great-grandparents with memories of World War Two? We would love to hear their stories too!

A Wonderful Morning of Reading Together!
We were delighted to welcome over 150 parents and family members into school for our Reading and Stories Morning on Friday last week. Families joined phonics and reading sessions in classrooms before sharing stories together – it was wonderful to see so many children enjoying books with the important adults in their lives.
Every child also had the chance to visit the Roving Bookshop, choosing their own book to take home. Not only does this help nurture a love of reading, it also raises money for new books for our school library.
A huge thank you to everyone who supported the event – whether by joining us in school or purchasing a book. Your support makes a real difference in helping our children grow as confident, enthusiastic readers.

Today in assembly we shared the wonderful picture book My Mum, which celebrates all the different things mums and carers do to help us feel loved, supported and safe.
The story helped us think about the many ways people who care for us show kindness every day — from helping us learn and grow, to making us laugh, comforting us when we’re sad and cheering us on.
We also linked our learning to International Women`s Day, thinking about the amazing contributions women make in families, communities and around the world. We spoke about inspiring women such as Jacinda Ardern and Marie Curie, who have helped and inspired others in different ways.
Children finished the assembly by reflecting on how they could show appreciation to the people who care for them — a small reminder that our Be Kind ethos begins with the way we treat the people closest to us.
